The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) has been undertaking low-carbon demonstration projects and preparing them for scale-up in Toronto since 1991. Now, TAF’s model is being adapted for use in other cities, through Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3). LC3 is a partnership between seven local centres and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to help cities reach their full emissions reduction potential. TFF helped launch LC3 which obtained $183M in the 2019 Federal budget.
Scaling up low-carbon solutions for the Greater Montreal
The Greater Montreal Climate Fund (GMCF) aims to bridge the gap between public investments and traditional investors to participate in the implementation of innovative solutions, particularly in the following sectors: building renovations and net-zero construction, renewable energy, transport electrification, decarbonized mobility and circular economy. The GMCF received $32M from the federal government, in partnership with the Canadian Federation of Municipalities.
Developing an ambitious climate plan for Montreal
This 3-year project brought together a group of philanthropic foundations, the City of Montréal and the international organization C40 Cities, to develop the Montreal's Climate Plan. This collaboration led to the announcement, in December 2020, of an ambitious and concrete Paris-aligned plan. The initiative places Montréal among the world's leading C40 cities by making the ecological transition a pillar of its prosperity and attractiveness.
Mobilizing civil society towards net-zero
The Montreal Climate Partnership aims to mobilize economic, philanthropic, institutional and community forces to help reduce GHG emissions by 55% by 2030 and put the city on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050. It is inspired by the best international mobilization models, such as the Green Ribbon Commission in Boston.
